Just a place to record some thoughts on Animated Shorts I watch (rather than writing blog posts for every one).
November 2020
- 'Out of Sight', Ya-Ting Yu (2010) - Yeah, really wonderful. Uses visual storytelling really well to put you in the shoes of the main character. Uses sound really cleverly too (in conjunction with what's on screen). Animation was cute and I liked the slightly washed-out watercolour look.
December 2020
- 'Canvas', Frank Abney (2020) - watched this on Netflix and sadly thought it was a bit bland and predictable. Women were all care givers or like 'idealised' (and the guy was definitely Pixar because the mum had an actual dumptruck ass). Animation itself was crazy impressive though. Was legitly amazed at the detail on all the rigs and especially loved the way the car dipped before it took off.
- 'Thermostat 6', Maya Av-Ron, Marion Coudert, Mylène Cominotti & Sixtine Dano (2018) - this was sick. It starts of nicely and lets you think it's just about a family having dinner but there are so many clear signs that there's more going on. For me, there was even a penny-drop moment when I realised it was about climate change (at least I think it was). Also the directors and artists did a top job of making you feel incredibly uncomfortable watching the short, so you're completely on side with the main character. Animation and framing were both beautiful. Loved it.
- 'Moses of Prosthesis' ('義足のMoses'), ががめ (@Utsugame) (2013) - real nice. They actually sold it so well with the ghost and the shoes having independent movements that were genuine and would have made sense on their own, as well as having them come out of sync or alignment here and there. I think the animation itself took a few too many shortcuts with both the ghost and the shoes staying still for a lot of frames but it all looked nice and felt wonderful.
